Low Tide at the End of the Pier

Walked to the end of the pier at low tide - a very sad sight - just a collection of concrete bocks and boulders.
One of the huge slabs of concrete dislodged from the pier.

Aftermath of the Storm

The recent storm nicknamed 'the beast from the east' has caused further damage to the Lower Largo pier. The end of the pier has now disappeared, leaving only a mass of boulders.
The east side of the pier has also suffered further damage.
Just for comparison, a picture looking down on the pier taken in May 2008. Even then the tip of the pier had been damaged by storms in March of the same year, but had been repaired by that October.
The easterly gales also drove a mass of seaweed onto the beach.

Return to Pooley Bridge

Last October took the ferry from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge then walked over this lovely old bridge into the village. Sadly in December the bridge collapsed when Storm Desmond hit Cumbria cutting off the access to the village.
Repeated the trip last week and glad to say that a new temporary bridge has now been built - not as attractive as the old one but very serviceable with access for pedestrians and vehicles.

Major reconstruction also still going on at Glenridding which was devastated by Storm Desmond.

No Access to Lower Largo Pier

Have been away for a few days and there has obviously been a storm during that time and further damage done to the pier at Lower Largo. The whole of it has now been blocked off, leaving no access to the pier from the car park.

A Stormy October Day

Such good weather over the last few months with sunshine, little rain and light winds that it seemed summer would never end but with October the first stormy days of Autumn have arrived.

The barriers that were supposed to stop access to the crumbling end of the pier have collapsed in the storm. Not that they were particularly effective as it was easy enough to get round the side, but I suppose they did act as an indicator to the perilous state of the pier.
Can only wonder at what further damage may be done over the winter if no repairs are made. Such a shame.

Gabions and Coastal Erosion

At the foot of the Massney Braes in Lundin Links close to the swings There are some wire cages filled with stones (gabions - from Italian gabbione meaning big cage). These are being used to protect the bank from erosion. Gabions work by providing a strong support for otherwise weak areas of earth. Loose soil fills the spaces between the rocks and collects in front of the gabion, preventing more soil from being washed away.
Unfortunately slightly to the west of the gabions there has been a further small landslip.

In Lower Largo, east of the last house at the Temple, there are two other sites where there has been considerable erosion.

At one point a further layer of rock has been exposed at the top of the beach.

No Way Through

Sad to see that as a result of the damage done by the winter storms there is now a barrier across Lower Largo Pier. This is the second attempt as a previous metal barrier soon ended up in pieces over the side of the pier. Perhaps this one will be more resistant to the wind and tide!
A photo from the last time that I was able to stand at the end of the pier. Can see the extensive damage. It was a great place to take photos of the village, the bay, and the birds on the rocks opposite. It would be nice to see the pier restored once more.

Lower Largo Pier - More Storm Damage (2)

The high tides have battered the end of Lower Largo Pier in the last week.

Further damage resulting from the high tides and wind over the last few days.

Lower Largo Pier - More Storm Damage

After the recent stormy weather there has been a further collapse at the end of Lower Largo Pier.
About a month ago, I walked round and underneath the end of the pier at low tide and a large hole had developed under the concrete. Could actually see daylight coming through in two places. The top concrete surface of the pier has now collapsed into that hole.

High Tide and Storm Damage

A combination of strong winds and a high tide on Saturday caused considerable damage down the East Coast of Scotland. In Lower Largo much of the surface on one side of the pier has been washed away.
